Blood donor
Author: www.hope5.com   Add date: 06/07/2008   Publishing date: 06/07/2008   Hits: 0

I have O-blood, and was diagnosed with hemochromatosis last year. The nurse suggested I give blood at least two times a year to reduce the level of iron in my blood, and thus reduce any future complications from my condition. I also want to give because of my rare blood type. I find it very difficult to fit the schedule of the visiting Red Cross blood donor volunteers. Is there any place within reasonable proximity to the campus that I can donate on a regular basis?

I just want to give blood

Dear I just want to give blood,

The easiest thing you can do is to make an appointment with St. Luke's blood donor services. Call 523-2335--appointments are scheduled from 8:30am-3:45 pm, Monday to Friday. The services are located in the Travers Building at 114th and Amsterdam on the first floor. Your other choice is a company called New York Blood Service who are the ones who supply blood to the Red Cross. They have two centers in the city, neither of which is incredibly convenient to Columbia. But, for your information, one is at 310 E. 67th St. between 1st and 2nd Aves. and they are open Monday and Friday from 8:15 to 3:15 and Tuesday, Wed. and Thursday from noon-7:15. The other center is at 153 E. 53rd St. at Lexington and their hours are M,W, F from 8:15-3:15 and Tuesday, Thursday from 7:15-7:15. To schedule an appointment with them, call 1-800-933-2566.
