I was born with a genital defect which is extremely obvious. I have
three nostrils. Throughout my life, I have obviously experienced
ridicule. I have learnt to deal. At Columbia, I find that instead of
people just asking me, they stare and talk. It's s
omething which frankly, I'm not used to. What do I do to
deal?
--Three-nostril monster
Dear Three-nostril monster,
As Alice has mentioned to others, how you deal with your difference is
up to you. Usually, if it is not something that bothers you, others will
give up their ridicule quickly. If they see you react, then there's a
point to their staring and talking. You can try ignoring them, responding
with, "Do you want to ask me something?", or wear a sign that labels you
as a three nostril monster. There are obvious advantages and disadvantages
to all of these methods. Usually, an assertive response works best to get
people to stop and think: 1) Name the behavior that is bothering you; 2)
Criticize the behavior, not the person; and, 3) Tell them what action you
want them to take. So, in your case, it would be: "You're staring and
talking about my nose. It's degrading when you do that, so please stop." You can adapt this tool to your own style and the particular needs of each situation.
You might also want to explore making an appointment with a doctor at Health Services for a possible plastic surgery referral. Good luck!
