Hi
A relationship issue here: My fiancee spends big bucks on her family at Xmas, my family has an
agreement to spend a max of $50 and we draw names to buy for one person. My fiancee and I
split all expenses, including for these presents, 50/50. I end up spending $300-$400 on her
family, she spends no more that $25 on mine. I am a bit resentful over this situation. How can we
even this up?
Don't let the greenbacked Grinch steal your Christmas! Talk with your fiancee about your view of
the imbalance in your familial gift giving. Family traditions, politics, and expectations can be hard
to change, but maybe you could reach a compromise; spend a little more on your relatives and a
little less on hers. Your family could get a few more presents, and her side might learn that a good
time can still be had by all, even if there are fewer boxes under the tree. Use your holiday dilemma
as a springboard for important conversations about everyday compromise, sharing, and financial
matters before they become coal in your relationship stocking.
If reasoning with your fiancee doesn't work, have Santa and his/her reindeer deliver this holiday
